Note: Pepe and his family rent a room with air conditioning. They keep a beautiful and spacious garden, which attracts you to stay for a while and to have a nice chat with the family. Of course you can let yourself be pampered with delicious food. It´s the perfect place for those who want to rest. Here in the heart of nature you will find peace and quietness. The house is located about 4 to 5 km away from the tourist center of Soroa. Either you are looking for a ride to go up to Soroa or you take a walk - better but not in the midday heat.

Soroa is a very small village in the mountains, about 60km east from Habana. If you want to get out of the capital city a few days, looking for nature and silence, then Soroa is your place. Here you will enjoy mountains, rivers, water falls, fishing, horse riding. You will eat good food and meet very hospitable people.

To do in Soroa

The water fall (Salto de agua). It is a short excurcion about half an hour, and an easy way. It's a exotic place (plants, fruits), where you can take a bath under the water fall. But as everywhere in Cuba here you have to pay for enjoing the nature. The entrance costs 1 CUC.

Viewing point (Mirador). In one hour you will stay in the high of a mountain from where you can have a beautiful view of Soroa, the north and south coast and other mountains. Don't forget to take with you something to drink, because during the way and at the Mirador you can't buy anything.

Orquideas garden (Jardín de Orquideas). Not only for people interested in botanic a nice place. The entrance will cost you 3 CUC. Some of the guides also speak some english.

Excursions

Sierra de Rosario is located some 20km east from Soroa. It's an area, protected by the Unesco. In the center of the Sierra de Rosario you will find the village "Las Terrazas". There is a valley inside another one, rounded by the San Juan river, by a wood of real palms, with a lot of orange trees, mango trees, flowers and a very good smell. There you can enjoy the nature, walking or with a horse as you prefer. There are places for swimming and other one's for fishing. There also an ancient coffee plantation which you can visit. At "Las Terrazas" you will find also a recomendable hotel - the Hotel La Mokka. Also at Las Terrazas is located a ecological vegetarian restaurant. Don't miss it - great food! Another excurcion can be to Pinar del Rio or Viñales, but I suggest you to go to these places for more than an excurcion (I mean to stay there two or tree days when you have time, of course).

How to go to Soroa

Taxi. An easy and fast way to go to Soroa is by a Cubataxi. It will cost you about 40 CUC and the journey will take about one hour and a half.

Viazul. The bus from Habana to Pinar del Rio and Viñales stops at the highway nearby Candelaria if you ask for. From there you can get by any transport to Soroa or the house of Pepe. It's certainly a good idea to organise the transport from the highway to the house of Pepe in advance. Ask Pepe, he will organise this for you. When you're travelling back to Habana you need to inform the Viazul office in Pinar del Rio, so the bus will stop at the same place on the highway. If you don't do so you maybe able to catch a truck but Viazul will not stop...

Train. The train from Habana to Pinar del Rio stops at Candelaria. Because of the timetable I only suggest you to travel between Candelaria and Habana by train. Train will leave about at 11 o'clock in the morning and arrives at Habana around 15:00. In the other direction - the train leaves Habana at about 23:00 and arrives around 3 o'clock in the morning at Candelaria. A journey by train is certainly something very diferent to a journey by Viazul. It's a small adventure, needs a lot of time but you will also meet a lot of people and the ticket is really cheap.
